Ionic Hair Straightening Technique, Chemical Treatment for Curly, Wavy or Frizzy Hair
Many people with curly or wavy hair, dream of having smooth, shiny, frizz free hair, and will go to any lengths to get it. Fortunately though, according to one popular US lifestyle website, you will no longer have to take extreme measures to attain your desired look. There was never really an effective way to permanently alter your hair and change curly to straight until the emergence of thermal reconditioning or Ionics. This Japanese system of hair straightening gives fabulous and dramatic results, without any of the damage associated with other hair processing treatments. In fact it is reported to vastly improve the condition of the hair, transforming the hair into a glossy and flowing mane.
During the Ionics process, which can initially take up to 8 hours, [subsequent treatments take around 3 to 4 hours], the hair is saturated with a chemical which changes its structure, so that it no longer retains its curl. After rinsing and blow-drying, hair is carefully flat-ironed and a neutraliser is applied, locking in the straight configuration. You are advised not to allow your hair to become wet for 3 days after the treatment, nor wear a ponytail, or in fact do anything that may cause your hair to kink.
Once this time period has elapsed you hair will be absolutely straight, sleek and shiny whatever you do. You will not be able to curl your hair in any way until it grows out, which is why its a good idea to make sure it is what you want before embarking upon the process.

Another option of course is a relaxer, which will work to ease and soften tight, curly or coarse hair by breaking through the structure or make up of the hair. The relaxant solution is applied, then rinsed and neutralized after around 20 minutes. Again as with the thermal conditioning treatment, your hair will be permanently changed, so if you decide you want to be curly again you will need to wait for it to grow out. Relaxers can be harsh so if your hair is coloured, you may have to forego this treatment until the colour has grown out or been trimmed.
The stylist will probably want to know what you have had done to your hair in the last two years, as over processing should be avoided. Hair which has been bleached and some types of henna, are not ideal for the application of chemicals used within straightening treatments including Ionics and thermal reconditioning.
Straightening Process for Coloured, Curled or Wavy Hair, Permanently Altered Hair Structure
Another, slightly controversial method of straightening your curly hair, and one which will last up to 4 months, is the Brazilian treatment. The product used in this process, contains keratin protein and a varying amount of formaldehyde, a carcinogenic chemical which poses health risks if inhaled.
Customers can ask at their particular salon which products contain chemicals such as formaldehyde, if they wish to avoid these being used when styling their hair.
Keratin Complex Hair Therapy, is a process which leaves the hair surface smooth but does not significantly change the structure by permanently breaking bonds. This allows the hair to gradually return to its former state after a period of time. Keratin Complex Hair Therapy, is claimed to use a ‘captured form of formaldehyde’, and that any harmful gases released during treatment are within the guidelines set by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration. The amount of gas produced has not yet been fully tested, and stylists report that this treatment does not give off the noxious chemical odour of the Brazilian treatments. The product is applied to the hair, the hair is then blow dried, flat-ironed and the solution is left in the hair for 3 or 4 days before being shampooed out. People can benefit from this treatment regardless of if they have coloured hair, waves or tight curls. Frizz is controlled while retaining texture and volume, although you will still need to blow dry the hair straight.
Hair Conditioning Oils, Serums, Masks & Treatments for Glossy, Shiny Hair Health
Many salons offer a selection of luxury hair conditioning treatments including Kerastase Fusio-dose, an application to suit your individual hair needs, Kerastase Masque-intense speed service, for an instant nourishing shine and Kerastase Elixir Ultime, for intense rehydration. In addition there are a variety of shine enhancing, pH balancing and colour-revitalising treatments available. Most professional salons will also stock a range of hair conditioning oils, serums, masks and treatments from brands such as Keratase, Ghd and Redken.
For a hair straightening treatment which you can do at home, and that will work until your next shampoo, you could try a deep conditioner. Apply the conditioner and gently work into the hair from the roots to the ends, then slip on a shower cap for 10 minutes. This will trap the heat from your scalp and help the conditioner to penetrate right into the hair cuticle, you then simply have to rinse and dry your hair.
