Male & Female Hair Loss

It is thought that around 50% of men and 25% of women will experience hair loss at some stage.

Male & Female Hair Loss & Baldness Explained

Normal Hair Growth Cycle
The average scalp has 100,000 hairs sitting in follicles under the skin. Each hair has its own growth and shed cycle. So some hair is growing while other hair is resting.

There are three stages of normal hair growth:-

Hair Growth
For a typical non-balding person, around 90% of the hair is in the growth phase, which lasts- 3 – 7 years.

Hair Transition
Lasting around 2 weeks, in this phase the root of the hair becomes detached from the follicle and starts to move up towards the surface of the skin.

Resting Hair
In the resting phase, lasting 3 – 4 months the hair be shed or pushed out by a new growing hair, when the cycle starts again.

Hair Loss
Hair loss occurs when this cycle is disturbed and the shed rate of the hair exceeds re-growth.

Hair Loss - Men
Male pattern baldness normally starts with a thinning of the hair at the temples and crown of the head is usually hereditary. The cause is an excess of a chemical called Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. This causes the hair follicles to make thinner and thinner hair until they eventually cease production.

There are other causes of hair loss including fungal scalp infection, iron deficiency, under active thyroid and stress. Treatment of the symptoms will usually reverse the problem. In these cases, the hair loss is often patchy and a visit to the doctor is recommended.

Female Hair Loss
A common form of hair loss in women is a condition called Telogen Effluvium, This is usually a reaction to intense stress on the body's physical or hormonal systems. The condition often begins fairly suddenly and gets better on its own within about six months.

Telogen Effluvium is related to the growth cycles of hair. A sudden stress on the body can trigger large numbers of hairs to enter the shed phase at the same time. Then, about three months later, this large number of hairs will be shed. As the new hairs start to grow out, so the density of hair may thicken again.
Many men and women, have an episode of Telogen Effluvium at some point in their lives, reflecting a period of illness or stress.

The DHT imbalance also affects many women. Research suggests that over 10% of women experience this sort of hair loss before the menopause, and that over the age of 65 the figure is more than 50% The typical pattern of hair loss in women is not the receding hair line and crown loss experienced by men. Women experience a general thinning of the hair, predominantly from the sides and top of the head.

Hair loss in women can also be caused by Alopecia Areata. This is an autoimmune disease affecting more than two per cent of the population. Here, the hair follicles are attacked by white blood cells. The follicles become very small and hair production slows down dramatically, so there may be no visible hair growth for months or years.
